Before Canada became an independent country the British Government appointed a Governor General, whose main duty was to keep watch over the colony for Britain. Today, the Canadian government appoints the Governor General, and there is no longer a connection with the British government beyond the role of the Queen as the head of state. The Governor General, like the Queen in Great Britain, acts only on the advice of the Prime Minister and the Cabinet.
